EMDR

I now offer (in-person) EMDR sessions for existing and new clients.

According to EMDRIA, EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes, showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR therapy has even been superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007).

EMDR sessions consist of identifying what concern/issue/memory you’d like to focus on, creating a treatment plan together, and then once history has been taken, rapport has been built, and we both feel it is a good idea to proceed we will begin EMDR sessions. I typically only offer EMDR sessions to clients who are able to attend therapy weekly (not biweekly), and the length of treatment varies. However, it is not uncommon that an established client and I may have a few EMDR sessions to address a particular issue, and then return to talk therapy.

Please reach out if you are interested in learning more about EMDR, and to see if it feels right for you!
